Boulton Paul Defiants of No. 264 Squadron. Operations began with convoy patrols in March 1940 but the Luftwaffe was able to take advantage of the Defiant's vulnerability to frontal attack, and the RAF suffered heavy losses. At the end of May 1940 264 squadron began to train in the night-fighter role but was forced to return to day fighting during the Battle of Britain again suffering heavy losses.
